Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy in Edmonds & Renton, WA
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses a concentrate of your own blood platelets to help your body repair injured tissue. At Healing Peak in Edmonds and Renton, Dr. Amber Nixon uses PRP to treat many musculoskeletal conditions without surgery or lifelong pain medication.
What Is Platelet Rich Plasma?
Platelet rich plasma, also known as PRP, is blood plasma with highly concentrated platelets. Platelets are a type of specialized blood cell involved in injury healing. The concentrated platelets contain growth factors that help start and speed up tissue repair in bone, tendon, ligament, and cartilage. They also support the growth of new blood vessels and the wound healing process.
How Does PRP Therapy Work?
A small amount of your blood is taken and processed in our lab to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, along with small amounts of stem cells. The PRP is then injected into the damaged or painful area, where it stimulates the healing process. New collagen begins to develop, which helps stabilize the injured tissues and joints.
Benefits of PRP
Many patients notice significant improvement in their symptoms, including better function and range of motion and less pain. For some, PRP reduces the need for medications, cortisone injections, or surgery.
Areas We Treat With PRP
- Low back
- SI joints and pelvis
- Shoulders
- Elbows
- Wrist and hand
- Hips
- Knees
- Ankle and foot
- Arthritic joints
- Torn muscles, ligaments, and tendons
- Scars and stretch marks
Is PRP Right for Me?
PRP is not right for everyone. People who are in good physical condition and generally healthy are the best candidates, since PRP works only as well as your body’s healing response does. All patients are screened before treatment, and Dr. Nixon can help improve your foundational health first. PRP is not covered by insurance.
What to Expect on Treatment Day
A PRP visit usually takes about an hour in the office and is done on an outpatient basis. Your blood is drawn and processed in our lab, then the PRP is injected right away into the injured areas. More than one area can be treated in a visit. Some localized soreness and discomfort is common at first.
Recovery After PRP
You can walk out on your own after treatment, but we prefer that you have a driver. Post-injection discomfort usually lasts 24 to 48 hours. It may be mild or not noticeable for some people and more significant for others, and mild pain medication may be needed. You can move about in your day-to-day activities right away. We suggest at least one full week off sports and exercise, then a gentle return to activity in the second week.
How Many PRP Treatments Will I Need?
The average number of PRP treatments is 2 to 4, depending on the area treated, the extent of the injury, and your overall health, nutrition, and hormonal status. Treatment continues until you reach optimal pain reduction.
